Early-winter fishing quick-start
- Season note: Early winter slows fish metabolism. Water temps drop, so target deeper pockets and structure where warmer water or bait congregates.
- Where to fish: drop-offs, weedlines, shade lines, channels, and points that hold warmth or bait. Look for places where baitfish stack up as the day warms a bit.
- Tactics: slow retrieves, jigging, and vertical presentations. Use soft plastics, jigs, spoons, or small live bait if allowed. Keep your line and rod tip light and sensitive so you feel subtle taps.
- Depth and gear: aim for 8–20 feet or deeper where your sonar shows fish holding. A sensitive rod with light-to-medium action and 6–12 lb test line helps you detect light bites.
- Bite windows: bites often come during slight warm spells, around midday, or after a light rain where the water stirs up bait.
- Weather effects (Season: early winter): clear sunny days with a light breeze can push bait into coves; overcast days can also bite well if there’s a bit of wind stirring the water.
