Quick, practical fix to get that line free (from the photo):
-
Stop reeling and open the bail (for spinning reels) or ease tension (for others).
-
Identify where the line is stuck: around the spool lip, inside the spool, or tangled in guides.
-
Free it by type:
- Spinning reel: Open bail, manually unwind the line off the spool by turning the reel handle slowly, then pull the line free. If the line is wedged on the spool, remove the spool cap and unwind from the spool.
- Baitcaster: Remove the spool or cut the line near the spool and unwind the line from the reel body.
-
Tools that help: small scissors or line cutters, needle-nose pliers, and a dental pick or thin wire to tease the line loose. Don’t yank—the line or reel can be damaged.
-
If the line runs through the guides or is snagged on the lure, back it out toward the reel or cut and retie.
Prevention tips: avoid overfilling the spool (leave a little space), check for nicks, and spool line more evenly.
