Spillway fishing around Pittsburgh – quick guide
Spillways along Pittsburgh-area rivers (Allegheny, Monongahela and downstream toward the Ohio) can be hot spots for active predators like smallmouth bass, walleye, sauger, and even striped bass when conditions line up. With the current early-spring weather (Overcast, ~57°F, mild wind), you’ll often see fish moving to slightly warmer, more oxygenated water and hitting baits that imitate baitfish drifting through the current.
What to target and where
- Target species: smallmouth bass, walleye/sauger, striped bass (in spillways with strong flow), catfish and occasional largemouth along the banks.
- Best spots: spillways and fast-edget areas near the confluences on the Allegheny and Monongahela; downstream Ohio River pockets can also hold active fish on warmer days.
Gear and tactics (early spring)
- Rods/reels: medium-heavy setups for leverage against current; consider a longer rod for better casting across fast water.
- Hooks/lures: lipless crankbaits, blade baits, swimbaits, and jig-and-bait combos work well in current. For walleye/sauger, jigging with live bait or soft plastics near eddies can be deadly.
- Line: 12–20 lb fluorocarbon/monofilament with a 10–20 lb leader when dealing with sharp rocks and snaggy bottom.
- Retrieve: cast across or slightly upriver, allow your bait to sink, then a steady or erratic retrieve that rides the current down through riffles and eddies. In heavy current, prefer shorter, controlled pulls to avoid snagging and to stay in the strike zone.
Safety and timing
- Weather swings can change bite windows fast. Early spring means slick rocks and cold water; wear a PFD when near fast water, and avoid standing on slick spillway edges.
- Best bite windows are often early morning or late afternoon when light and after-front water temps rise a bit. Overcast days can keep fish more settled and willing to strike at bottom-presenting baits.
Practical tips
- Use polarized lenses to spot structure and fish-holding eddies in murky spillway water.
- Adjust your weight so your lure maintains contact with the current without getting snagged on rocks.
- If you’re new to spillways, start with bank fishing near easier-to-access eddies and work your way to steeper sections as you gain confidence.
