Late May at Pena Blanca Lake, Arizona is a classic shallow-water bass window, and a buzz bait can absolutely get it done 🎣
For color, I’d start with:
- White if the water is clear to lightly stained — it gives you the best silhouette and flash in the early morning.
- White/chartreuse if there’s a little color in the water or you want more visibility in choppier light.
- Black if you’re fishing dawn, dusk, or heavy cloud cover — it makes a strong profile and is easier for bass to track from below.
At Pena Blanca in late May, I’d lean white as the default and only switch darker if the light is low or the water is dirtier than expected. Late spring bass are often guarding edges, chasing fry, and roaming the first weedline or shallow cover, so a buzz bait that moves water and stays visible is the ticket.
For a trailer, keep it simple:
- A toad-style trailer for maximum lift and a bigger profile. This is my favorite choice if you want the bait to stay high and audible.
- A paddletail swimbait trailer if you want a little more weight, better hookup odds, and a tighter swimming look.
- If bass are missing it, trim the trailer shorter or switch to a slimmer body to reduce drag and help them commit.
My go-to setup would be:
- White buzz bait
- White or pearl toad trailer
- Slow, steady retrieve just fast enough to keep the blade churning
A few quick tips:
- Fish it first light and around shallow rock, tules, laydowns, and windblown banks.
- If the lake is calm, a buzz bait with a bigger blade can help fish find it.
- If bass blow up but don’t stick, add a small stinger trailer hook if the cover allows.
If you want a confidence moving bait for this pattern, a chatterbait or spinnerbait is also a great backup. Good late-spring bass fishing is all about making the bait easy to find and hard to ignore — and a properly chosen buzz bait does exactly that. Tight lines!
