In temperate waters, late March is all about sun-warmed pockets and margins as days lengthen and temps tick up. The general rule is to target the top 0.5–2 m (about 1.5–6.5 ft) of water, especially along sunlit banks, near weed edges, and around any shallow drop-offs. Depending on weather, you’ll see carp using a slightly wider or deeper window, so here are solid starting points:
- Baseline depth (typical sunny days): 0.5–2 m (1.5–6.5 ft). The warmest shallow zones near the margins will often be the first to feed.
- Milder, bright afternoons or warm pockets: stay in the shallows around 0.5–1.2 m (1.5–4 ft) where sun warms the bottom most quickly.
- Cool or overcast days: the feeding depth can shift a bit deeper, around 1–2 m (3–6 ft), especially near the edge of weed beds or a sun-warmed drop-off.
- Warmer pockets or weed edges with a little depth: you may find carp feeding actively at 1.5–2.5 m (5–8 ft) where the water is a touch warmer and food holds close to the bottom.

- Shallow bays and margins that see sun most of the day.
- Edges of weed beds where warmth concentrates and forage clusters.
- Gentle drop-offs near the shore where the bottom still reads as bottom yet sits in slightly warmer water.

- Days with sun and light winds heat shallow spots quickly; expect bites in margins after a warm afternoon.
- Cold fronts can drop the temps and push fish back toward slightly deeper, slow-moving water.
- Temperature cue: carp typically start feeding actively once water temps approach ~8–10°C, with better activity as temps climb into the 10–14°C range on brighter days.

- Use a marker to map depth and find those subtle depth breaks (margins to ~2 m marks are common).
- Ballast bait at or just above the target depth to ensure your boilie/hookbait sits in the same zone the carp are feeding.
