Short answer: Sweet corn on a hair rig is the most reliable bait for grass carp, especially near weed beds and grass edges.
Why corn works: Grass carp are herbivores; corn is bright, scent-laden, and easy for big mouths to grab. It's also inexpensive and easy to present on the bottom.
Other good options:
- dough balls (flavored dough made from flour, water, and a touch of attractant)
- alfalfa pellets or other plant-based pellets
- small plant-based boilies (8-12 mm)
- bread or lettuce pieces in a pinch
Rig and presentation:
- use a hair rig with a small hook (size 6-10) and secure 2-4 kernels of sweet corn on the hair
- the goal is to present corn off the bottom so it’s easy for the fish to pick up without feeling resistance
- if weeds are heavy, consider a pop-up corn rig to lift bait off the bottom
Mid-fall tips: Cooler water slows feeding a bit, so pre-baiting helps. Look for warm pockets along weed lines or sun-warmed shallows. A little pre-baiting (12-24 hours) with corn or pellets can bring the carp in and get them feeding.
Techniques:
- pre-bait edges with corn or pellets
- keep tackle light enough to feel takes but strong enough to handle a big grass carp
- watch for surface splash or line flicks; best hits often come soon after casting near weed edges

Give it a go and stay patient — grass carp can be shy, but with the right plant-based bait and a little pre-baiting, you’ll be into fish. Tight lines and good luck!
