For bass around docks after rain, I’d start with something that can cover water fast but still sneak into the shade pockets 🎣
My first three picks
-
Chatterbait / bladed jig — This is usually my first throw when the water has a little stain or the fish are cruising dock edges. It shines on the outside corners, dock posts, and the first deeper shade line. A medium-fast retrieve with a few pauses is money. The underwater action makes it a great search bait. -
Skipping jig — If the rain has pushed bass tight to cover, a jig skipped way back under docks is hard to beat. Go darker if the water is dirty, and use a compact trailer. Target the shadiest, most protected stalls first. Good references: Catch 10x MORE Fish Using A JIG and SKIPPING Docks with JIGS- Summer Bass Fishing.
-
Wacky rig or tube — If the bite gets finicky after the rain or pressure change, slow down with a subtle bait. Skip it deep and let it fall on slack line. These are especially useful when bass are just sitting under the dock instead of chasing. See How to Catch Bass Around Docks with Wacky Rigs and I catch a lot of fish on this bait! What the weather says
Since the pressure is rising, the bite can be a little touchy after the rain front passes. That usually means bass want a slower, more precise presentation under docks rather than a wide-open power game. Also, with only light wind and clear sky, shade becomes the prime real estate — especially the back side of docks and the darkest pilings.

Practical dock plan
- Start on the shadiest docks with a chatterbait.
- If you get follows or short strikes, switch to a jig and work the posts slower.
- If the bass are spooky or neutral, skip a wacky rig/tube way back and let it soak.
- Hit the first dock off the bank, especially if rain added slight color to the water.
If you want, I can also build you a 3-bait dock rotation for clear water vs muddy water after rain. Keep at it — docks give up giants when everyone else is just casting the obvious stuff 😎
