For bass around docks after rain, I’d start with a reaction bait first, then slow down if the fish don’t bite. 🌧️🎣
Best first throw
If the rain has stained the water a bit and the docks have shade, my first choice is a chatterbait / bladed jig. It covers water fast, ticks dock posts, and draws reaction strikes from bass that are tucked tight but willing to feed. A moving bait is especially good when pressure is falling like it is here — that often creates a short feeding window before the next weather move.
If the docks have heavy cover, rope, or laydown shade, a hollow-body frog can be a killer second choice, especially around the outside edges and walkways. If the bass are already locked onto the shade and not chasing, slide to a jig or tube and work it slowly under the dock edges.
What I’d throw in order
- Chatterbait / vibrating jig — fan-cast the outer dock line and bump posts.
- Skipping jig — pitch deep under the darkest parts of the dock.
- Tube or compact soft plastic — great for pressured fish and cleaner skips.
- Frog — best if there’s thick surface cover or mats around the dock.

A couple dock-specific tips
- Target the shadiest side of the dock first.
- After rain, fish the outer edges and any place where current funnels bait.
- If the water got dirtier, go with darker colors or strong vibration.
- Keep your skips low and controlled so the bait lands quietly.
With the weather pattern here, I’d bet on a chatterbait first, then a skipping jig. That’s a pretty classic “don’t overthink it” dock combo. Tight lines — go make those bass leave their shady little apartments 😄
