After rain, dock bass usually want an easy meal with a little cover nearby. I’d start with a compact, weedless lure that can get into shade, posts, and the nasty little corners where the big ones sit. Since you’re dealing with falling pressure and light drizzle on a warm late-spring day, that can actually be a feeding window 😎
What to throw first
- Chatterbait / bladed jig — My first choice for covering water. Work it along dock edges, over submerged brush, and past the shady side of posts. Keep it moving just fast enough to tick cover without hanging up.
- Skipping jig — If the bass are tucked deep under docks, skip a punchy jig or finesse jig under there and let it fall on semi-slack line. This is a great “big fish” play.
- Wacky or Texas-rigged soft plastic — If the water got a little stained after rain and the bite is finicky, slow down. A wacky rig around dock shade or a Texas rig around cables and posts is money.
- Topwater frog — If the docks are in heavy shade with pads, matted grass, or overhangs, a frog can be the bonus bait when bass are hunting upward.

Quick game plan
- Start on the shady side of the docks, especially where wind pushes bait.
- If the water is muddy, go darker colors: black/blue, junebug, or dark green pumpkin.
- If it’s just lightly stained, try white/chartreuse on the chatterbait.
- Cast past the dock and skip or swim your lure into the sweet spots.
- If you get one bite, milk that dock hard — bass often stack up in small groups.
If you want, I can also build you a 3-lure dock box for clear water, stained water, or muddy post-rain water. Keep casting — the dock monsters are usually home when the weather gets a little moody 🎣
