Short answer: after rain, I’d start with a chatterbait or spinnerbait around dock corners, shaded slips, and any water that’s slightly stained. If the rain dirtied the water a lot, go louder and more noticeable first; if it only added a little color, a jig or wacky rig under the docks can be money 🎣
My first three casts
- Chatterbait / bladed jig — my first pick when you need to cover water fast. It throws vibration, flashes, and deflects well off dock posts and edges. Work it with a steady retrieve and occasional pauses so it can tick posts and disappear under shade.
- Spinnerbait — especially if the bank is cloudy after rain or there’s a little chop. Keep it close to dock shade lines and let the blades do the talking.
- Jig or wacky rig — if fish are already tucked under the dock and not chasing, pitch it precisely to posts, corners, and rope tie-offs. That’s when the “dock fish” get cranky and commit.
What to look for around docks
- Steep docks and docks next to deeper water after rain
- Windblown sides of the marina or cove if the rain came with wind
- Color seams where dirty runoff meets cleaner water
- Docks with shade, floating cover, brush, or pontoon-style floats
- Any dock near a creek arm or runoff source

Lure order I’d try in late spring after rain
- Moderately stained water: chatterbait → jig → wacky rig
- Heavy stain: spinnerbait → frog → loud moving bait
- Clearer water after rain: jig → wacky rig → underspin
Late spring fish are often cruising shallow but using the dock shade as a ceiling and post legs as ambush cover. Hit the first dock hard, then fish the next ten more carefully than the first. Bass around docks are like grumpy homeowners: if the first knock doesn’t work, the next one might be the one that opens the door 😄 Keep at it—you’re in a very fishy pattern.
