Start with a compact, weedless bait that can get deep under the dock fast. After rain, bass often slide tight to cover and ambush from the shade line, especially when the pressure is falling and the water gets a little freshened up. 🎣
What to throw first
- Skipping jig or compact Texas rig — my first pick when I want a bite now. A black/blue or green pumpkin jig with a craw trailer is money around dock posts, corners, and walkway shade.
- Wacky rig or stickbait — if the fish look picky or the water is clearer than expected, let it shimmy beside the posts and stall it in the shade.
- Chatterbait / bladed jig — if the rain pushed bait around and the fish are active, swim it parallel to the dock edges and around the outer shade line.
- Hollow-body frog — only if the docks have heavy mats, matted laydowns, or thick surface junk nearby.
Why this works after rain
- Falling pressure can trigger a short feeding window before the next weather change.
- Light rain / overcast usually helps shallow dock fish stay aggressive.
- With low wind and very little cloud cover, fish may get a little spooky, so presentation matters more than bulk.
- Focus on the shadiest side, dock posts, flotation edges, and any place bait can pin up.

Lures to focus on first
- Skipping jig
- Wacky rig / stick worm
- Compact Texas-rigged craw or beaver
- Chatterbait
- Frog if the docks are nasty
Simple dock game plan
- Work the outside edge first to find active fish.
- Then skip under the darkest docks and hit posts, cables, and float corners.
- After a rain, don’t rush: let the bait fall on a semi-slack line and watch for the line jump.
- If one bait gets ignored, downsize before you abandon the area.
If I were making one cast first, I’d start with a skipping jig or Texas rig and fish it painfully slow under the shade. That’s the dock-boss move 😎 Tight lines!
