Start with a skipping bait or a compact jig first 🎣
After rain, bass around docks usually slide shallow and tuck tight to shade, post clusters, and the darkest corners. With rising pressure and only light wind, the bite is often a little slower and tighter than on a pre-front feeding window, so I’d begin with something you can place accurately under cover rather than a wide-search bait.
Best first throws
-
Skipping jig or compact Texas-rigged soft plastic
- Pitch or skip it deep under the dock and let it fall on a semi-slack line.
- Focus on posts, cables, floats, and dock edges.
- If the water’s a little stained from rain, choose darker colors like black/blue, green pumpkin, or junebug.
-
Chatterbait / bladed jig if the water is off-color and you want to cover water
- Great for the outside edges, corners, and open slips.
- Retrieve it with a steady swim or occasional pause to keep it in the strike zone.

-
Frog only if the docks are matted with grass, lily pads, or thick floating debris
- If the cover is truly nasty, a hollow-body frog can get bites bass won’t give up for anything else.

My simple dock game plan
- First 15 minutes: skip a jig or Texas rig under the shadiest dock corners.
- If that fails: run a chatterbait along the outer edges and entrances.
- If the dock has grass: throw the frog.
Because it’s late spring, bass are often active, but after rain they’ll still favor easy meals and low-light cover. Start precise, then expand. Go make a few clean skips and trust the shade lines — that’s where the paychecks are hiding 😎
