After rain, especially in late spring, I’d start with a search bait around the shadiest, dirtiest, and most protected docks first. Rain usually pulls bait and bass shallow, and the falling pressure in your forecast is a classic feed window signal 🌧️🎣
What to throw first
- Chatterbait / bladed jig — my first pick if the water is a little stained. It covers water fast, deflects off dock posts, and gives bass a strong vibration target. Work it with a steady retrieve and occasional pauses so it can bump cross-members and shade pockets.
- Skipping jig — if the bass are locked tight to dock shade, a jig skipped way back under the platform is money. Let it fall on semi-slack line and shake it just enough to look alive.
- Topwater frog — if there’s floating grass, mats, or matted debris near docks, a hollow-body frog can be deadly in post-rain lowlight. Keep it patient: twitch, pause, then walk it through holes and edges.
- Wacky or Texas rig — when the bite is finicky, slow down and probe the highest-percentage docks, especially the ones with deeper water nearby.
Best dock targets after rain
- Downwind shore: wind stacks bait and warmer surface water there.
- Docks with shade + deeper water: bass can slide out and ambush.
- Clean-to-muddy edges: that color change is often a feeding lane.
- Posts, pontoons, and cross braces: those are ambush points, not just “cover.”

Quick game plan
- Start fast with a chatterbait or spinner-style bait.
- If you get one bite, slow down and dissect that dock with a jig or wacky rig.
- Make extra casts to the darkest shade pockets and the first dock on the outside edge of a pocket.
- In post-rain conditions, don’t ignore the cleaner water nearby — bass often sit on the edge and ambush into the dirtier stuff.
If you want, I can also give you a dock-only 3-lure rotation for stained water or a skipping setup for baitcasting gear. Tight lines — the dock monsters are usually home after rain 😄
