What should I throw for dock bass after rain?

GuestGuest

Start with a compact, easy-to-place bait when bass are tucked around docks after rain. My first three casts would be:

  1. Skipping jig or compact Texas-rigged soft plastic under the darkest dock shade
  2. Chatterbait / bladed jig along the outside edges and dock walkways
  3. Soft swimbait or underspin when fish are suspended a little off the posts

After rain, bass often set up where fresh runoff, slightly stained water, and shade mix. If the water has a little color, they’ll usually move shallower and feel safer under docks. If it’s muddy, slow down and fish tight to cover—posts, floats, ladders, and the back corners. If the rain was heavy and the water is still rising, focus on the cleanest water near the docks and any place where wind pushes plankton or bait.

Because your weather shows rising pressure and light SE wind with a pretty warm late-spring pattern, I’d expect a better bite early and late, especially around sunrise and sunset. The bite may be a little less aggressive than it would be on a falling front, so make sure your bait lands quietly and stays in the strike zone longer. 🎣

Lure-style shortlist

  • Jigs for precise shade pitching
  • Chatterbaits for stained water and active fish
  • Wacky or Texas rigs for dock pockets and dead-sticking fish
  • Swimbaits / underspins when bass are roaming
  • Frogs when cover is thick or the docks connect to grass

If you only tie on one bait first, make it a compact jig or Texas rig and fish the darkest, quietest dock possible. Then expand to a chatterbait once you locate the active fish. You’ve got a very fishy setup here—go make those dock bass pay rent 😄
