After rain around docks, I’d start with a search bait that covers water fast, then follow up with a skip bait for the shady pockets under the dock. Because the pressure is rising and the wind is light, the bite may be a little more cautious than it would be during a falling-pressure window—so keep your presentation clean and precise 🎣
What to throw first
- Chatterbait / bladed jig — my first choice if the water has any stain at all. It lets you fan-cast dock edges, posts, and shade lines quickly. A medium retrieve with occasional pauses is money, especially if baitfish are active.
- Swimbait or underspin — great when bass are suspending around dock walkways or shaded corners. Keep it moving just fast enough to tick the fish’s interest.
- Jig or wacky rig — once you find a dock with fish, slow down and target the darkest spots, rope areas, and post bases.
Best dock approach after rain
- Fish the downwind side of the docks if bait gets pushed there.
- Start with the outer edges and corners, then skip or pitch into the deepest shade pockets.
- If runoff made the water a little dirty, use darker colors or something with vibration/flash.
- If the sun breaks out, docks become even better because the shade is more concentrated.

Lure order I’d use
- First cast: chatterbait
- Second look: swimbait or underspin
- Then slow down: jig, Texas rig, or wacky rig
- If cover is nasty and shallow: frog
If you want, I can also give you a dock-fishing rotation by water clarity—clear, stained, or muddy—so you know exactly what to tie on first. Tight lines!
