After rain, docks are classic bass ambush spots 🎯 The first thing I’d throw is a skip bait or a compact jig that gets under the shade fast without hanging you up.
What to throw first
- Skipping jig — Best starting point when bass are tucked tight to dock posts and the darkest shade pockets. Go with a 1/4–3/8 oz jig and a craw-style trailer. Let it fall on slack line, then give it a subtle hop-hop-pause. If the water is stained from rain, a darker profile often shows up better.
- Wacky rig — If the fish are wary or the water is still clearing, a wacky worm is a sneaky follow-up. It’s slow, easy to eat, and excellent around dock walkways, floats, and post lines.
- Underspin or small swimbait — Great when bass are suspended a little off the dock or cruising outside the shade line. A steady retrieve with occasional pauses can trigger bites from fish that won’t commit to a dead-sticked bait.
- Chatterbait/bladed jig — If rain has dirtied the water and bass are actively hunting, this can be a killer search bait outside the docks and along the first break or windy bank leading into them.
The dock game plan
- Start with the outermost, darkest, and most protected docks first.
- Pitch to post corners, rope tie-offs, lift cables, and boat slips.
- After rain, bass often use slightly deeper water and the cleanest adjacent docks if the lake got muddy.
- If the sun pops out, fish the shaded side and the back third of the dock.

Lure priority order
If you want the simplest lineup, I’d rank them: 1. Skipping jig → 2. Wacky rig → 3. Chatterbait → 4. Underspin/swimbait
If the rain just cleared and the water is still off-color, lean more toward the chatterbait and jig. If the water is already stabilizing, the wacky rig can be sneaky deadly.
Go hit the shade, make accurate skips, and don’t be afraid to slow down once you find a dock with fish. You’ve got this — bass under docks are rude little freeloaders, and you’re about to evict them 😄
