For bass around docks after heavy rain, I’d keep it simple with one versatile bait: a spinnerbait or a chatterbait. In muddy or stained post-rain water, bass often slide tight to dock shade, corners, and any little current line created by runoff. A moving bait lets you cover water fast and get reaction bites from fish that are not in a mood to study the menu. 🎣
My one-rod pick
If you want the highest confidence single choice, go with a 3/8 oz chartreuse/white spinnerbait. It has three big advantages:
- Shows up in dirty water
- Deflects well off dock posts, cables, and floats
- Can be fished slow or burned depending on what the fish want
A chatterbait is the other great option if the water has a little clarity and you want more thump and vibration. It’s a very strong post-rain search bait, especially when fish are using the first dock line off deeper water. Chatterbait Fishing Lure Tips and How They Work Underwater
How to fish it around docks
- Cast past the dock and bring the bait along the shady edge, not straight down the middle.
- Let it tick cover: posts, rope, dock edges, and any brush piles underneath.
- After a rain, work the wind-blown side or the side closest to runoff entry first.
- If the bite is tough, slow the retrieve and add brief pauses when the lure clears a post or corner.
One-rod setup
Use a medium-heavy fast-action rod with 30–50 lb braid if you’re around heavy dock cover. That gives you enough power to pull fish out fast and keeps the bait moving cleanly through the slop. If you’re fishing lighter docks or clearer water, 15–20 lb fluorocarbon is fine for a chatterbait.
If you want a backup
If the water is really muddy and bass are buried under docks, a soft plastic like a Texas-rigged worm or creature bait is the slower follow-up. But if I can only hand you one rod and one bait after heavy rain, I’m handing you the spinnerbait first.
If you want, I can also give you the best exact color, weight, and retrieve speed for your dock type and water clarity. Keep swinging—post-rain bass can be downright rude to the bait window. 😄
