For bass around docks after heavy rain, I’d keep it dead simple: tie on a spinnerbait or a chatterbait and make one rod do most of the work 🎣
Why that pick? After rain, water near docks is often stained, flooded, and full of baitfish and bugs. A moving bait helps you cover water fast and find the active fish. Bass will often tuck under the shade, floaters, pilings, and the first available ambush point near the dock. A spinnerbait gives you flash and thump; a chatterbait gives you a stronger vibration and a little more body to it. If the water is really muddy, go with black/blue or white/chartreuse. If it’s just dingy, white, shad, or bluegill colors usually shine.
If you want the simplest “one rod” setup, use a medium-heavy fast-action casting rod with 30–50 lb braid or 15–20 lb fluorocarbon. Braid is the more forgiving choice around dock posts, ropes, and wood because it slices grass and wins battles fast. Fluoro is a bit stealthier in clearer water, but after heavy rain I usually want the confidence of braid.
Here’s the play:
- Skip or cast the bait as far back under dock edges as you can reach.
- Let it fall for a second or two beside posts and corners.
- Retrieve with a steady medium pace, then give it a few brief pops if the fish are following but not committing.
- Hit every shade line, cross brace, post, and pocket around the dock before moving on.
If you only get one lure, I’d choose a 3/8 oz spinnerbait with a double willow if the water is only slightly stained, or a single Colorado/bladed spinnerbait if it’s muddy and you need more thump. A chatterbait is a great backup because it can be crawled a little slower and still stay active.
If you want a lure reference, the FONMANG 322-Piece Fishing Lures Kit includes spinnerbaits and jigs, and the PLUSINNO 137Pcs Tackle Box covers a bunch of bass basics. For a rod that fits this job well, the Custom ENOX BMJ Casting Rod is a solid multi-technique option for dock work.
If the fish won’t chase, then slow down and switch to a Texas rigged worm or creature bait under the dock. But for one-rod efficiency after heavy rain, start with a spinnerbait or chatterbait and fish the shade like you own the place 😄 Tight lines!
