First cast pick: a compact jig or chatterbait. After rain, bass slide tight to dock shade, posts, and the first hard edge they can ambush from. With falling pressure and a little cloud cover, they’re often ready to eat, so start with something that covers water but still gets into the dock zone cleanly. 🎣
What to throw first
- Chatterbait / bladed jig — my first choice if the water is a little stained. It gives you vibration, flash, and a baitfish profile that bass can find fast around dock lanes and outer posts. Retrieve it steady and slow enough to keep it thumping. If you get a bite, repeat that same lane before moving on.
- Skipping jig — if the rain made the water darker or the docks have heavy shade, skip a jig way back under the cover and let it fall on slack line. That’s often the money move for bigger bass.
- Wacky rig or tube — if the bite is fussy, go smaller and more natural. Pitch it to corners, walkways, and any shade line that looks “just a little better” than the rest.
- Topwater frog — only if the weeds and dock mats are thick and the surface is calm enough. After rain, frogs can be deadly in the back of shallow, covered pockets.
Best dock game plan after rain
- Work the outside corners first, then the shade side, then under the dock.
- Target posts, ropes, ladders, and floating cover — bass use these as ambush points.
- If the water is slightly off-color, go darker colors like black/blue, green pumpkin, or dark craw.
- If it’s clearer than expected, use natural shad or bluegill colors.
- Make your first cast count: bass around docks often eat the first bait that gets in their face.

Quick order of attack
Chatterbait → skipping jig → wacky/tube → frog. That sequence lets you start aggressive, then downsize if the fish get picky.
With the pressure slipping and the water likely a little more active after rain, you’ve got a solid shot at a dock bite window. Start on the shady side, make clean skips, and don’t leave a good dock too fast — the big one might be sitting on the second cast. Good luck out there!
