For bass around docks after rain, I’d start with a search bait first, then slow down if the fish tell you to. After rain, docks can turn into little ambush shelters: stained water, shade, bait pushed tight to the pilings, and bass that are happy to eat something that thumps or glides by. 🎣
What to throw first
- Chatterbait / bladed jig — my first pick when the water has color and the bass are active. The vibration helps fish find it in dirty water, and it’s deadly when you can skip it under docks or swim it along the shady edges.
- Swimbait — if the bite is a little more cautious, a paddletail or multi-jointed swimbait is a great second choice. It gives a more natural profile and works well around posts and dock shade.
- Frog — if the rain brought matted grass or floating cover near the docks, a hollow-body frog is a strong early throw, especially in late spring when fish are shallow and aggressive.
- Jig or wacky rig — if you see bass following but not committing, slow down and target the darkest, warmest, most protected dock corners. A jig is especially good for skip-and-pause presentations.
How to fish the docks
- Skip under the first two dock slips and let the bait fall on a slack line.
- Focus on posts, ladders, pontoon lifts, and shady corners.
- If the water is murky, use darker or louder presentations first.
- If it’s still lightly stained, a white, chartreuse, or shad-colored bait can help fish track it.
- After a rain, don’t ignore the wind-blown side of the dock line; bait often gets pushed there.

Best first choice by water color
- Dirty/stained: chatterbait or frog
- Lightly stained: swimbait or underspin
- Clearer pockets under docks: jig or wacky rig
With your late spring timing, fish can still be shallow and dock-oriented, especially after rain when they get a little extra cover and comfort. Start loud, then get sneaky if needed. Go make a few good skips and let the dock fish reveal themselves — they usually do 😎
