Start with a skip-able finesse bait and a moving bait backup 🎣
After rain, bass around docks often slide up to shade, seams, and the first clean water near the bank. With steady pressure and light wind/chop, you don’t need to overcomplicate it—fish the highest-percentage dock first and let the bass tell you how aggressive they are.
What to throw first
- Wacky rig / stickbait — My first pick if the water got a little dirty but not chocolate milk. It slips under dock walkways, posts, and cables, and it’s easy for bass to inhale when they’re a bit sluggish.
- Skipping jig — If the fish are tight to the shade or chewing bigger meals, a compact jig is money. Skip it far back, let it fall on semi-slack line, then give it a few short hops.
- Chatterbait / bladed jig — Best when you want to cover water around dock rows, especially if rain pushed baitfish shallow. It’s a great “find them fast” lure when bass are willing to chase.
- Frog — Only if the docks are surrounded by matted grass, pads, or thick surface cover. A hollow-body frog shines in late spring when fish are pushing shallow and protecting cover.
How I’d fish the docks
- Work from outer docks to the back; don’t burn your best casts on low-percentage targets.
- Focus on shade pockets, posts, pontoon lifts, brush, and dock corners where current from rain may concentrate bait.
- If the water is stained, use darker colors like black/blue, green pumpkin with chartreuse accents, or white/chartreuse for moving baits.
- Keep retrieves slower right after rain unless you see bait blowing up or bass actively chasing.

Quick rule of thumb
If the water is just a little stained and the bass seem neutral: wacky rig first. If they’re active: chatterbait first. If the docks are matted up: frog first. 😎
If you want, I can also give you a 3-bait dock rotation for clear water vs stained water after rain.
