Late spring + bass around docks after rain usually means one thing: shade, ambush points, and slightly dirtier water 🎣
What to throw first
Start with a compact moving bait that can cover water fast but still deflect around posts and shade:
- Chatterbait / bladed jig — my first pick if the water got a little stained. It throws flash, vibration, and pushes water, so bass can find it even when visibility drops. Work it parallel to dock edges, then let it tick posts and fall into gaps. Good starting point: Chatterbait Fishing Lure Tips and ChatterBait Comparison Underwater.
- Frog — if the docks sit over shallow grass, laydowns, or heavy cover, a frog can be money after rain, especially if the shoreline got a little flooded and the fish slid shallow. Try it around the shady corners and back slips. See Basics of Frog Fishing.
- Jig or Texas-rigged plastic — when bass are tight to the darkest shade or refuse a moving bait, slow down with a jig skipped under the dock or a wacky/Texas rig pitched to posts. The skip game matters here: How to Skip Docks, Bass Around Docks with Wacky Rigs, and Catch 10x More Fish Using a Jig.
Best lure types for this scenario
- Chatterbait: best all-around search bait for stained water and active fish.
- Skipping jig: best for the nastiest shade pockets under docks.
- Wacky rig / Texas rig: best when fish are pressured or picky.
- Frog: best when rain pushes fish shallow into cover.
- Underspin: great if bass are suspended off dock edges and want a little flash without a full-speed retrieve. Check out Dock Fishing Bass With Underspin Jigs.

Dock-fishing game plan
- Fish the shadiest dock first after rain.
- Focus on outer corners, posts, and the deepest slips.
- If the water is dirtier, go with darker colors or high-contrast profiles.
- If the bite is sluggish, slow your retrieve and pause beside posts — bass love a bait that looks like it’s trying to escape 😄
If I had to keep it simple: start with a chatterbait, then skip a jig, then clean up with a wacky or Texas rig. That sequence covers the whole mood range from aggressive to fussy. Tight lines — the dock fish are usually home if you put the bait in the right shadow!
