For bass around docks after rain, I’d start with a search bait that covers water fast, then slow down if you get followers or short strikes. Given the late spring timing and the drizzle/steady pressure vibe, docks are prime because bass often slide shallow to ambush bait, but rain can also muddy the edges a bit — so let the lure do some talking 🎣
What to throw first
- Chatterbait / vibrating jig — my first pick for covering dock rows quickly. It’s weedless enough to tick dock posts, and the blade gives off vibration in dingy water. If the water has a little stain from rain, this is money. Use a white, green pumpkin, or shad color and make long casts parallel to the dock line.
- Skipping jig — if the bass are tucked way under the shade, skip a compact jig as far back as you can. Docks with deep shade and cross-rails are classic big-fish spots.
- Wacky rig or tube — if they won’t chase, slow down. These are great when bass are suspended under walkways or holding near the first shade line.
- Hollow-body frog — only if the docks are tied to heavy grass or matted cover nearby. Otherwise, it’s more of a bonus bait than a first move.
How to fish it
- Cast parallel to the dock face first; that keeps your bait in the strike zone longer.
- Hit the shadiest side, especially where posts, cables, and floatation create ambush lanes.
- After rain, fish often position on the first clean edge or the side getting a little wind-blown bait.
- If the water is stained, go slower and louder; if it’s clear, use more natural colors and tighter actions.

If I had only one bait to start with, I’d tie on a chatterbait and work dock edges until I found the depth and shade level they wanted. Then I’d slow down with a jig or wacky rig to clean up the bigger bites. Go get ’em — dock bass are rude, predictable, and very catchable 😄
