What should I throw first for dock bass after rain?

GuestGuest

Throw a black or green pumpkin jig first, skipping it under the shady back corners of docks and letting it fall on a slack line. With a falling barometer, cloud cover, and post-rain stain, bass usually position tight to shade and ambush points. If they won’t eat the jig, switch to a wacky rig or a soft jerkbait and work it slower.

First move

  • 1/2 oz jig in black-blue or green pumpkin
  • Add a chunk or craw trailer
  • Skip to the inside corners, posts, and deeper dock ends
  • Retrieve: hop-hop-pause, then let it sit 3–5 seconds

Why it should work

  • Rain pushes bait and bass tighter to cover
  • 15 mph wind with gusts makes the downwind side of docks even better
  • Falling pressure often gives a short feeding window before conditions stabilize

Backup plan If the jig gets no reaction, throw the soft jerkbait on a light weighted hook and twitch-pause it beside the dock shade. In slightly clearer pockets, a spinnerbait on the windy side can call fish out fast.

Next cast: skip the jig to the darkest dock corner and let it fall all the way to bottom before you move it.
