What should I throw for bass around docks after rain?

GuestGuest

Throw a 3/8 oz spinnerbait first, then a skipping jig or soft jerkbait under the darkest dock shade. After rain, bass often slide tight to docks, posts, and the first clean water edges. With rising pressure and a south wind, I’d start by covering water on the wind-blown dock faces, then slow down on the shady backsides.

First move

  • Lure: Spinnerbait in white/chartreuse or shad
  • Target zone: outside corners, dock walks, and any post line with a little stain
  • Cadence: steady retrieve, occasional pause when it bumps a post or shade line
  • If bites are short, switch to a skip bait: a black/blue jig or weedless soft jerkbait skipped as far under the dock as you can

Why it should work

  • Post-rain stain gives bass more cover to ambush
  • Late spring means fish can be shallow and aggressive, especially around bluegill and shad near docks
  • Sunrise to mid-morning is best here, but even later in the day, the shadiest docks stay good
  • Today’s conditions are clear sky with only light cloud cover, so bass may hold tighter to shade after the water settles

Adjust if

  • Water is still muddy: go darker spinnerbait/jig colors and fish tighter to posts
  • Water is clearing fast: slow down with the soft jerkbait and longer pauses
  • Wind is stronger than it looks: fish the downwind dock banks first

Next cast: fan-cast the first 3 docks on the wind-blown shore with a spinnerbait, then skip a black/blue jig to the darkest back corner of the best dock.
