After rain, especially in late spring, I’d start around docks with a confidence bait that gets bit fast: a chatterbait, jig, or wacky rig. If the water got a little stained from the rain, a bladed jig is usually my first cast because it flashes, thumps, and helps bass find it. If the docks have shade and clean water, a skip-pitch jig or wacky rig can be deadly for bass tucked tight to posts and walkways. 🎣
What I’d throw first
- Chatterbait / vibrating jig — Best when rain adds color and bass are roaming the edges of docks. Make a steady retrieve and bump posts if you can.
- Jig — Great for skipping under docks and working the darkest shade pockets. Let it fall on semi-slack line and crawl it slowly.
- Wacky rig or Texas-rigged stickbait — Excellent if the bite is finicky or the water is only lightly stained. Pitch it to openings and let it sink.
- Hollow-body frog — If the docks sit near grass or matted cover, this becomes a strong top choice, especially with overcast or low-light conditions.
How to fish the docks
- Focus on the shadiest side and the first hard cover under the dock: posts, pontoons, ladders, tie-offs.
- After rain, bass often use docks as ambush cover while bait gets pushed shallow.
- Work docks from the outside in: cast the edges first, then skip farther back if you get no reaction.
- If the sun pops out, slow down and target the darkest pockets.

Quick tackle tip
If you’re skipping docks, use braid to fluorocarbon leader or straight fluorocarbon for better control and a cleaner skip. A medium-heavy fast-action rod usually gives you the mix of skipping accuracy and hook-setting power you want.
With your current weather, the light wind and possible rain windows suggest fishing the shady dock edges early, then slowing down as the sun gets higher. You’ve got a very fishable setup here — start with the chatterbait, then force-feed them a jig if they won’t chase. Go get ’em 💪
