What should I throw for bass around docks after rain?

GuestGuest

After rain, docks can be money for bass — especially if the rain added a little stain and the water is still fishable. In late spring, I’d start with a search bait first, then slow down if the bite is finicky. 🎣

What to throw first

  1. Chatterbait / bladed jig — My first pick when I want to cover water fast. It shines around dock posts, shade lines, and the outer edges of docks. Use a steady retrieve with occasional pauses, and tick the posts or cables if you can. 2. Skipping jig — If the fish are tucked deep under the shade, skip a jig way back under the dock. A compact flipping or casting jig with a small trailer is a killer after rain when bass want a bigger meal. 3. Frog — If the docks are surrounded by grass, mats, or thick shallow cover, a hollow-body frog is a great power play. It’s especially good when bass push shallow after the rain and want a weedless meal. See Basics of Frog Fishing and How to Fish Hollow-body Frog Lures.

  4. Wacky rig or tube — If the bite is pressured or subtle, switch to a slow fall bait. Around docks, a wacky worm or tube often gets bit when faster baits don’t. A good dock-focused option is the tube approach shown in I catch a lot of fish on this bait! Fishing docks for Largemouth Bass!.

Quick game plan

  • Start on the shady side of the dock and the up-current or wind-blown side if there is one.
  • Make a few casts to the outside corners, then skip to the deepest shade.
  • If the water is stained, go with darker colors; if it’s only lightly colored, natural green pumpkin or shad tones usually work best.
  • After rain, bass often use docks as a travel lane and ambush point, so don’t just fish the obvious front edge — get your bait under the dock.

If you want, I can build you a 3-lure dock box for post-rain bass based on whether your water is clear, stained, or muddy. You’re on a solid pattern here — now go make those dock fish nervous 😎
