Start with a compact search bait first 🎯
After rain, docks can get money because the runoff brings in baitfish, worms, craws, and shade-loving bass. With the falling pressure in your forecast, there’s often a short feeding window before the weather settles down again. I’d start with a chatterbait or swim jig and work it parallel to dock edges, posts, and shade lines. If the water is a little stained, that thumping vibration helps bass find it fast.
My first three casts under docks
- Chatterbait / vibrating jig — cover water quickly and trigger reaction bites. Run it with a paddletail trailer or slim swimbait trailer.
- Skipping jig — if you see thick shade, pilings, or deep dock pockets, skip a 1/4–3/8 oz jig way back under there and let it fall on a semi-slack line.
- Wacky or Texas rig — if the bite is picky, slow down and pitch a stick worm or small creature bait to the darkest parts of the dock.
Best dock game plan after rain
- Fish the downwind bank if the wind stacks bait there.
- Work outer posts first, then skip deeper into the shade.
- Focus on docks near steeper water, points, channel swings, or any hard bottom.
- If the sun pops out, bass often tuck deeper under the dock and want a more vertical presentation.

Lures I’d prioritize
- Chatterbait / bladed jig
- Skipping jig
- Wacky-rigged stick worm
- Texas-rigged soft plastic
- Paddletail swimbait
- Topwater frog only if the docks have heavy mats, bushes, or thick surface cover
If you want the simplest answer: start with a chatterbait, then slow down with a skipping jig or wacky rig. That combo covers both reaction bites and fussy dock fish. Tight lines — you’re fishing the right kind of water for a real bite 💪
