Throw a black/blue or dark spinnerbait or chatterbait first, skipping it along the shady dock edges and posts, then follow with a wacky-rigged stick bait if they won’t chase.
First move
- Lure: Spinnerbait or chatterbait
- Color: dark shad, black/blue, or white/chartreuse if the water is stained
- Target: outside corners, dock posts, shade lines, and any blown-in debris line
- Retrieve: slow-roll it just fast enough to tick cover, then pause and let it flare when you hit a post or cable
Why it should work
- Late spring + overcast means bass can stay shallow and use docks as cover.
- Falling pressure often makes bass feed better before/around a front.
- 14 mph wind and 20+ mph gusts will push bait to the downwind side of docks, so start there.
Backup plan
- If they want a subtler look, skip a wacky rig or soft jerkbait under the dock and let it sit longer.
- If the water is dirtier than you expect, go darker and louder; if it’s clearer, downsize and use more natural shad colors.
