If you’re targeting bass around docks after rain, I’d start with something that can cover water fast but still slide into the shade pockets where bass tuck up. 🎣
What to throw first
- Chatterbait / bladed jig — my first pick when the water has a little color from rain and bass are roaming dock edges. It gives you flash, vibration, and a profile bass can track in stained water. Run it parallel to dock faces, then tick posts and let it free-fall beside the darkest corners.
- Skipping jig — if the bass are tighter to the dock, go straight to a compact jig and skip it deep under the dock. That’s often the highest-percentage play once the fish lock onto shade and ambush lanes.
- Wacky or soft plastic skip bait — if they want a slower fall, pitch a wacky rig or a compact stick bait under the dock and let it sink on slack line. Great when fish are pressured or finicky.
- Frog — only if the rain brought fresh grass, mats, or thick dock cover. Otherwise, docks usually call for subsurface presentations first.
Why this works after rain
With your current conditions, the key weather cue is overcast and a rising pressure trend after rain. Overcast helps bass stay shallower and roam longer, but rising pressure often makes them a little more cautious, so I’d lean on precision around shade rather than pure speed. The early morning and sunset windows are especially good.

- TRUSCEND Swimmax Easy Catch Swimbaits — useful for a baitfish-style dock bite.

- TRUSCEND Rooster Tail / Spinner Lures — good search bait around dock outer edges and shade lines.
My simple game plan
- Outside dock edges: chatterbait or spinner-style lure
- Shade pockets / cross members: skipping jig
- Deep under docks: wacky rig or soft plastic
- Thicker cover after rain: frog or swimbait
If I were making one cast to start, I’d throw a green pumpkin or shad-colored chatterbait first, then follow up with a skip jig to any dock that gets ignored. That combo usually tells you fast whether the fish are active or just being picky. Tight lines — you’ve got a very fishable setup here!
