After rain, docks are bass magnets — especially if the rain knocked some forage, stained the water a bit, or cooled the shoreline. With rising pressure and partly cloudy skies, I’d start with a search bait and then slow down if the bites don’t come quick. 🎣
What to throw first
- Chatterbait / bladed jig — my first look bait for dock rows after rain. It covers water fast, pulses hard in stained water, and draws reaction bites from bass tucked on shade lines and dock posts. If the water is dirtier, go a little darker; if it’s only lightly stained, white/bluegill colors shine.
- Skip a jig under the darkest dock corners next. Bass love that protected space after a rain event, especially if the bank got a little runoff and the fish slid tight to cover.
- Wacky rig or Texas rig if the bite is pressured or you’re seeing followers but no commitment. A slower fall often gets dock fish to finally commit.
- If docks are grass-adjacent, don’t be shy about a frog over matted edges or shaded walkways where bass can ambush from below.
Best dock approach
- Cast to the outside edges first, then work the posts, corners, and shaded slips.
- In brighter windows, target the shadiest side of the dock. In overcast conditions, bass may roam a little wider.
- If the water clarity improved only slightly after rain, stay closer to the surface with moving baits. If it’s muddy, fish slower and louder.
- The best windows are usually early morning and sunset — those low-light periods can be money around docks.

Lures to prioritize

- Skipping jig
- Wacky worm

- Hollow-body frog if there’s heavy cover nearby
If you want the simplest plan: start with a chatterbait, then skip a jig under the darkest dock, then slow down with a wacky rig. That sequence catches a lot of dock bass after rain. Tight lines — those shady little loafers are usually home! 😄
