Throw a chartreuse/white spinnerbait first, then a skipping jig if the fish are tucked tight. After rain, docks often hold bass on the darkest shade, corners, and the first dock row nearest deeper water. If the water is stained, start with a 3/8 oz spinnerbait and slow-roll it so the blades thump. If it’s clearer or the bass won’t chase, switch to a compact jig or soft jerkbait and skip it under the dock.
First move
- Lure: 3/8 oz spinnerbait or chatterbait-style bladed jig
- Color: white/chartreuse in stain; green pumpkin if clarity is decent
- Target: dock walkways, posts, corners, and the shaded back side
- Cadence: steady retrieve with occasional pauses; bump posts and let it fall
Why it should work
Rain usually pushes bass to use cover and ambush points, and docks give them both shade and current relief. A moving bait covers water fast and lets you find active fish before you slow down.
Adjust if
- Very muddy water: go louder/bigger profile first, like a spinnerbait or frog over thick shallow cover.
- Clearer water: use a wacky rig, tube, or skipped jig under the darkest dock shade.
- Fish following but not committing: pause longer, or downsize to a soft jerkbait.
