What should you throw for dock bass after rain?

GuestGuest

Throw a green pumpkin jig or a skip-friendly soft jerkbait first. After rain around docks, bass usually tuck tight to the shadiest posts, the first deep edge, and the calmest pocket. With overcast skies and a rising pressure trend, I’d start with a lure that can be skipped far under docks and fished slowly.

First move

  • Green pumpkin jig: skip it to the darkest back corner, then let it sit 2–4 seconds before a short hop.
  • If the water has color or you want more flash, switch to a spinnerbait or chatterbait and slow-roll it parallel to the dock face.
  • If fish are suspended, a 4.75" soft twitch jerkbait twitched-pause-twitch under the dock can trigger reaction bites.

Why it should work

  • Rain often pushes bass shallow and makes docks better because they add cover and shade.
  • Overcast keeps fish roaming more and less glued to deep shade.
  • Wind around 10–15 mph creates enough chop to help conceal your bait, but gusts over 20 mph can make them pull tighter to the cover.

Backup plan

  • If the docks are muddy and stained, go spinnerbait/chatterbait first.
  • If the water stays clear, go jig or soft jerkbait first.
  • Make your next cast to the shallowest shaded post on the upwind side of the best dock.
