What should bass eat around docks after rain?

GuestGuest

Start with a 3/8 oz spinnerbait or a skipping jig. After rain around Lake Austin shoreline docks, the best first cast is usually to the wind-blown side of the dock line and the shadiest slips/pilings, then work it back with a slow roll or hop-and-pause.

First move

  • Spinnerbait: Go with a white/chartreuse bait on the first pass if the water has any stain from rain. A blade bait like the Blackwake Spinnerbait is a strong match for docks, wind, and post-rain water.
  • Jig: If you can skip well, throw a 3/8 oz skipping jig or a compact trailer jig tight under the darkest dock corners.
  • If the water is clearer than expected, switch to a soft jerkbait like the 4.75” Twitch Jerkbait and twitch-pause it around dock shade.

Why it should work

  • Late spring means bass are often shallow and using docks as shade/ambush cover.
  • Overcast + steady pressure = fish stay more willing to move shallow.
  • SSE wind at ~16 mph with gusts pushes bait to the protected/downwind dock banks, but the gusts also mean you should fish the most sheltered pockets and use a lure you can cast accurately.

Adjust if

  • Water is muddy: stay with the spinnerbait first.
  • Water is clear: go jig or soft jerkbait first.
  • No bites after 10–15 minutes: downsize and skip a bait deeper into shade instead of changing lakeside zones.

Backup plan

Throw a hollow-body frog over dock walkways and mats if bass are coming up shallow; the 5PCS Topwater Frog Lures Set is the closest match in the product list. The next cast should be a spinnerbait along the darkest dock edge.
